Medicare Supplement Plan C
Medicare Supplement Plan C covers all of Medicare’s coinsurance or copayments, deductibles, the first three pints of blood of a transfusion, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and 80% of a foreign travel emergency.
The only thing it doesn’t cover is Medicare Part B excess charges, if that is allowable in your state.
However, those who turned 65 after January 1, 2020 are no longer allowed to purchase this plan because it covers Part B’s deductible. This is because of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015.
What is covered under Medicare Supplement Plan C?
Medigap Plan C covers 100% of the costs Medicare expects you to pay for:
- Medicare Part A coinsurance payments for inpatient hospital care for up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are exhausted
- Medicare Part B copayment or coinsurance expenses
- The first three pints of blood used in a medical procedure
- Part A hospice care coinsurance expense or copayment
- Medicare Part A’s deductible
- Medicare Part B’s deductible
And it covers 80% of a foreign travel emergency
What is not covered by Plan C that other plans do offer?
If you can get Plan C, it’s coverage can only be beaten by Plan F, which is also unavailable to anyone who turns 65 after January 1, 2020.
The only thing Plan C does not cover is Medicare Part B’s excess charges.
When can I enroll?
You can enroll once you have Medicare Part B. You will then have six months to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan with no health questions. This is a one-time open enrollment in which you cannot be turned down for any health conditions, you cannot be asked any medical questions, and you cannot be charged an additional premium for health reasons.
Technically, you can enroll at any time after you have Part B. However, if you sign up after your initial enrollment period, you will be subject to medical underwriting.
